What to do next?! - Test some glazes

9/2/2024

How on earth do you create something unique, something you enjoy making, something you hope other people will want to buy, something you can make over and over without losing the will to live????????? I keep feeling like am glimpsing a photograph that shows me the answer but the image is all jumbled up and just when I start to make sense of it, it changes or moves.

I am still being plagued with making/process issues and I am (despite wanting to just throw the towel in) persevering to try and resolve construction issues that keep resulting in cracking and breaking. I decided to look at experimenting with glazes as I thought this would be a useful distraction to help me focus on something positive that would contribute to the development of my work.

I was trying to make crawl glazes, lava glazes and a 3D glaze called gloop which I researched recipes using the online platform Glazy and Linda Bloomfield's "Special Effects Glazes" book. (Please refer to my glaze notes books for recipe details.

All three glazes were tested on porcelain, white, red, black and grey stoneware clay bodies. The gloop worked well on all the clays, though attaching the gloop was tricky. The lava and crawl glazes only worked as expected on the red and black clay bodies likely due to the excessive 'off gassing' from the high levels of manganese and  Iron Oxide in these clay bodies. The grey also reacted better, but the white porcelain and stoneware didn't work well. The addition of copper oxide to all the glazes at a rate of 1% and 3% caused the ingredients to flux and no crawling or bubbling occurred at all. More testing of this recipe is needed.
